Did an editor touch this?

Published September 10, 2026 · 1 min read

Forbes.com publishes two kinds of pages under one masthead, and only one of them passes through an editor before it goes live. Newsroom staff write one; a network of contributors — consultants, founders, coaches who apply or pay for the privilege — writes the other, submits it through a portal, and sees it published with light or no review. Both carry the same logo. Only one has anyone besides the author checking the facts.

Wikipedia's guideline on reliable sources asks for editorial control independent of the subject: a publication that fact-checks, edits, and stands behind what it prints. The community's sourcing noticeboard has examined Forbes.com specifically and split its verdict along that exact line — staff reporting generally reliable, the contributor network generally not, because nobody at Forbes reviews a contributor's claims about their own company before publication.

The tell sits in the URL and the fine print more often than in the headline. A staff-reported piece runs under a path like /news/, with a byline linked to a staff page and a masthead title. A contributor piece runs under /sites/, carries a role instead of a title — 'Forbes Councils Member,' 'Contributor' — and closes with a line disclaiming that the opinions are the author's own. Entrepreneur, Inc., and several other business outlets run the same two-track structure under different names: a leadership network, an expert panel, a councils program.

A source does not gain editorial control by sharing a logo with one that has it; the two tracks under the same masthead answer to different standards.

Draft reviewers and AfD participants check for this as a matter of routine. A biography built on three contributor pieces can look, at a glance, like three publications standing behind it. Open each link and find three URLs starting with /sites/ instead of /news/, and the citation count that matters usually drops to zero — a piece arranged by the subject is the subject's own account of itself, filed on someone else's domain.

None of this makes contributor content worthless as a starting point. It can confirm a date, a title, a detail that an independent source later reports without needing to cite it back. What it cannot do is carry a notability case by itself, and stacking several together doesn't change the arithmetic — three unedited accounts from people connected to a company add up to the same total as one.

The check costs thirty seconds: read to the bottom of the page before citing it. If the outlet discloses that its editorial staff didn't review the piece, take the disclosure at its word. The publication printed it for exactly that reason.
