The list's second notability test

Published October 13, 2026 · 1 min read

Forty-one venture-capital firms shared one Wikipedia page, each named once in a sortable table arranged by state and sector. Only one of the forty-one had ever been the subject of an independent article anywhere else online — and it wasn't the one still missing a citation.

Wikipedia's notability guideline sets aside a separate test for pages built this way. A stand-alone list does not need every entry inside it to be independently notable; the guideline known by its shortcut WP:NLIST asks instead whether the group as a whole — the set, not any single member — has been written about by sources with no connection to it.

A list topic is usually considered appropriate if its subject has been discussed as a group or set by independent, reliable sources.

The venture-capital table passed that test on a single citation. A regional business journal had ranked 'the state's fastest-growing venture firms' the year before, and at the page's one deletion discussion, an editor pointed to that ranking as proof the grouping meant something beyond the page that compiled it. The discussion closed as keep within a week.

Clearing that bar settles only one question. Wikipedia's verifiability policy still applies to every row in the table, separately from the page's right to exist: each entry needs its own citation tying it to the list's stated criterion, whatever that happens to be — ranked in the journal, founded after a given year, holding assets above a stated threshold. Forty of the rows carried exactly that. The forty-first carried nothing; a communications team had typed their client's name straight into the table, with no source attached at all.

An editor doing routine maintenance on the table months later removed the one row with no citation, left the other forty untouched, and logged the edit as a verifiability cleanup rather than a notability dispute. Nothing about the earlier deletion discussion had ever protected that row — the keep decision was about the journal's ranking, never about any individual firm sitting underneath it.

The two tests run on different timelines and answer different questions, and a list clearing the first one proves nothing about any entry's chances under the second. Checking a row's own citation before adding a client to a list that has already survived a deletion debate takes a few minutes. Discovering the gap after the row disappears takes a screenshot and an aggrieved phone call.
